This is your Tech Tidbits Daily for Monday, May 9th, 2005. Today’s
    podcast contains one technical reference.

PC Magazine published for May 24, 2005 on pages 118-119 examines the latest in input devices – specifically keyboards and mice.  For a traditional mouse, they found the Logitech MX518 Gaming-Grade Optical Mouse great for fine control and quick movements. It also has some software customization setting that make it handy for day-to-day computer usage also.

For those looking outside the box, you might want to try Contour Design RollerMouse PRO … it got a 4.5 out 5 score and an Editor’s Choice Award.  I have used a Contour Design RollerMouse (standard) in the past and I’ve found them to be great for creating less stress on my own hands.

On the topic of keyboards, they looked at Belkin, Kensington, Satek, BenQ, Logitech, and Microsoft.  And they rated the Logitech Cordless Desktop MX3100 with 4.5 out of 5; and the Microsoft Optical Desktop Elite for Bluetooth a 5 out of 5 with an Editor’s Choice Award.  I haven’t used any of these specific models, but I have a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse/Keyboard combo at home that has worked out pretty well for me.

  • Church Humor – Boring Pastor

An elderly woman walked into the local country church.

    The friendly usher
greeted her at the door and helped her up the flight of steps.

    "Where would
you like to sit?" he asked politely.

    "The front row please." She
    answered.

"You really don’t want to do that," the usher said. "The pastor is
    really boring."

"Do you happen to know who I am?" the woman
    inquired.

    "No." he said.

"I’m the pastor’s mother," she replied
    indignantly.

"Do you know who I am?" he asked.

    "No." she said.

    "Good,"
    he answered.

I have to agree a lot with this post Evil Genius Chronicles – Another Reason Not to Work for Free 05 08 2005.  Dave continues to make good sense with regards to advertising and creating content with value.

My only real difference in opinion is that someone may want to do this for "marketing" or "self promotion" value.  For instance, http://www.technewsradio.com is making some money via selling stuff either that I recommend or link to via Amazon.  So, anything that drives traffic to this site, does make it more likely for a "sale" to take place.

  • New Cell Phone – Sort Of (Thanks eTech & Nokia)

    May 7, 2005

    +

    +

At eTech 2005, I was one of the lucky winners of a Nokia 6630 phone (see below for press release or google search).  I finally got around to contacting my work communications team that run our wireless connection options.  I had a Siemens S46 which is the standard phone for the contract with AT&T – Cingular.  The 6630 isn’t on any of their lists of supported phones, but the S46 is SIM card enabled, so they suggested that I just pop it in and see what it happend. It worked!

So, now I have a new phone … but I could have had it back in March if it had a clue.

More digging is in order …

    Nokia press release (from Nov04):

Espoo, Finland – The Nokia 6630 smartphone, the
world’s first mobile phone to combine the benefits of 3G, EDGE and the
leading Series 60 platform, has started shipping. A great work tool for
anyone who requires a high speed connection in their pocket, the Nokia
6630 phone is the first dual-mode, tri-band handset designed to work on
3G (WCDMA), EDGE and 2G (GSM 900/1800/1900) networks around the world.

The Series 60 software platform combined with the
WCDMA radio interface offers unparalled benefits for Nokia 6630
business users. With thousands of applications available for the Series
60 smartphone platform, the Nokia 6630 can be customized to meet the
demanding needs of today’s mobile workforce. The mobile broadband
capacity of WCDMA networks also enables the Nokia 6630 imaging phone to
show high quality, real-time video streaming and to support video call
    on its bright color display.

Nokia 6630 users can be constantly connected to
their e-mail as well as automatically receive an alert of incoming
e-mail. E-mail attachments can be downloaded and viewed at mobile
broadband speeds of up to 384 kbps, and e-mail can be sent with speeds
of up to 128 kbps. To enable secure access to corporate Intranets or
e-mail servers while on the move, the Nokia 6630 also supports the
Nokia Mobile VPN client, available in the standard sales package.

With the built-in memory and in-box MultiMediaCard
(MMC), the Nokia 6630 features 74 MB of memory, making it easy to store
images, videos, music and other multimedia content. The Nokia 6630
smartphone incorporates a 1.3 megapixel camera* and 1 to 6x variable
digital zoom for picture and video capture. Its wide array of imaging
features also include manual brightness and contrast adjustment,
sequence mode for fast picture capture, up to 1 hour of video recording
as well as a manual and automatic video editor. The Nokia 6630 also
supports wireless printing directly from the handset utilizing
solutions by HP and Kodak. In addition to wireless printing, the MMC
can easily be extracted from the side of the phone and inserted into a
    compatible printer.

The Series 60 smartphone platform allows flexible
customization of the Nokia 6630 to enable easy access to network
operator services as well as providing developers with new application
    development opportunities. Weighing 127 g and measuring 110 x 60 x 21
mm, the Nokia 6630 is the lightest globally available megapixel
dual-mode phone for GSM and WCDMA networks. The Nokia 6630 smartphone’s
estimated sales price is expected to be around 500 euros, excluding
    local taxes.

This is your Tech Tidbits Daily for Friday, May 6th, 2005. Today’s
podcast contains a possible suggestion for making more accessible presentations.

A weblog called Binary Wolf recently had a suggestion for people who are creating presentations to consider Flash instead of Microsoft PowerPoint.  One recommended tool that enables using Flash is called Powerbullet Presenter v1.44 for Windows. There are two versions of this tool: free and Plus (for $20).  On the distribution side, you can output to Flash SWF for embedding into HTML files and websites.  And you can also build a Windows .exe.  Some key features include: drag and drop interface, dramatic fonts, customized animation schemes, and advanced non-traditional presentation options like brochures and catalogs.  Definitely worth taking a look at.

This is your Tech Tidbits Daily for Thursday, May 5th, 2005. Today’s podcast contains some links to more resources if you are in the market for a new digital camera and one announcement.

Over the last week or so, I have been helping a family friend try to decide what kind of digital camera is best of their family.  Two key resources that I highly recommend are: Digital Camera Resource  and Steve’s DigiCams Online.

Also in timely fashion, the Geek.com Tech Tip also for May 5th is on Digital Camera Basics.  Some items covered in this article include: Pixels;  Megapixels; Sensors – CMOS and CCD; Zoom – Optical and Digital; Memory – Digital Film; Aliasing; Aspect Ratio; and Connectivity.

I personally use a Sony DSC-W1 and my wife uses a Canon S70.

Now for the announcement, I have a copy of Billy Watson’s latest CD. I am going to hold a drawing.  If you vote over a Podcast Alley for Tech Rag Tear Outs or Tech News Radio and then send me email at technewsradio@gmail.com that you did that, then I’ll put your name into a drawing for a Billy Watson CD. I’ll draw the winner on 31May05.  If you actually don’t think either podcast should get a vote, send me an email on why and I’ll still put you in the drawing also.

This is your Tech Tidbits Daily for Wednesday, May 4th, 2005. Today’s
podcast contains one technical news item.

    • Hardware Analysis has a great article by Dan Mepham that looks at Intel’s new dual core processors the Pentium Extreme Edition and the Pentium D. These new processors do require a new chipset the 955X which is out now, or in the near future the 945X. It should be noted that the new AMD dual core processors are backward compatible to existing boards.
    • The primary focus of the testing was multi-tasking scenarios comparing a Pentium 4 660 in standard mode and in hypertheading mode.  The tests included Photoshop filter, archiving a large file, and copying a DVDs while reading a very large PDF file. The numbers are sort of what would be expected, the new dual cores did much better than the standard Pentium 4 660 but only slightly better when hyperthreading was enabled.
    • If someone is a heavy multi-tasking user then the dual core is probably for them. As Dan acknowledged in his review, know your users, their applications, and your cost constraints; and then you’ll be empowered to make the right technology deployment decision like this one.
