This is your Tech Tidbits Daily for Thursday, May 12th, 2005. Today’s podcast contains one technical reference.

Are you considering using two or more systems in your house or business? Maybe one running Windows and Linux, or add-in a new Apple MacMini to try out Mac OS X Tiger?  Harry McGracken in his Up Front article for the June 2005 edition of PC World has some suggestions with the help from David Lake and Tracey Capen.

Some things you should consider: KVM Switch; use one machine for heavy multi-tasking like burning a DVD while another is used for word processing and email; check out open source software that is cross platform like Open Office, Firefox, and Thunderbird; use the right tool – Linux maybe for servers and Windows for desktop productivity; and make sure you are part of an online community to get help.  These are all excellent suggestions.

  • Thinking About Idea Processing

    May 12, 2005

Dave Winer has been occasionally talking about this theme in several of his podcasts.  Most recently (I just listened to it on a much needed run):

4/26/2005: A new Morning Coffee Notes podcast
on idea processing software and how it relates to production software.
Just some of the thinking behind the OPML editor that I’m working on.

Another good one was an interview he did with his father (it is cool he has this opportunity, I have very little stuff like this from my dad who passed away in 1993):

3/29/2005: This morning I did an interview with my father, Leon Winer, about outlining and other topics. It’s the podcast for the day, probably the last of March 2005.

I am all about processing ideas beyond what Dave characterizes as production tools. I like to do that via outlines and sometimes I do that using a bunch of different tools: TextPad, straight HTML using FrontPage, TypePad, Outlook with PocketThinker, PowerPoint, OneNote, Project, MindMap, Word, Excel, my file system, and probably a couple of others (I was using Frontier Kernel Win32 release but it is buggy IMHO).

Being all over the place is a problem at times.  But it all comes together for me in my file structure or links back into Outlook.  So it works.  But I always think it could work better.

This is your Tech Tidbits Daily for Wednesday, May 11th, 2005. Today’s podcast contains one technical reference.

Back in March 2005 @ eTech 2005, I was one of the lucky winners of a Nokia 6630. I just recently realized that I could swap out my current Siemens S46 SIM card that utilizes AT&T – Cingular and put it in the 6630.  It worked, so the 6630 is my new primary work cellphone.  It is very powerful.  I think it might be for me a HP iPAQ PocketPC killer.  More on that maybe in another podcast.

But today what I wanted to mention was that with this new phone, something in the recently PC World for June 2005 in their Digital World section caught my eye.  They have five pointers to sites for "phone phreaks": PhoneScoop; HowardChui.com; Phone Mag; Zingy; and Treonauts.  More things to check out!

This is your Tech Tidbits Daily for Tuesday, May 10th, 2005. Today’s podcast contains on technical reference.

PC Magazine published for May 24, 2005 on page 120 has a short pointer to Tascam DP-01FX eight-track hard drive recorder. While this sounds interesting as a possible podcast production studio unit, there are three drawbacks identified by the reviewer Steven Wishnia: you can only record two track simultaneously, the metering and components [AND I QUOTE] "could be better", and the effects settings are out of the box set to presets that might not be useful.  He rates it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.  The unit retails for $500.

I am really enjoying the interviews being posted at Podcast Solutions.

How many people are they going to interview?

So far they haven’t really looked at the tech podcast field … but I am guessing they will before too long.

My guess is Doug Kaye at IT Conversations.

This is your Tech Tidbits Daily for Monday, May 9th, 2005. Today’s
    podcast contains one technical reference.

PC Magazine published for May 24, 2005 on pages 118-119 examines the latest in input devices – specifically keyboards and mice.  For a traditional mouse, they found the Logitech MX518 Gaming-Grade Optical Mouse great for fine control and quick movements. It also has some software customization setting that make it handy for day-to-day computer usage also.

For those looking outside the box, you might want to try Contour Design RollerMouse PRO … it got a 4.5 out 5 score and an Editor’s Choice Award.  I have used a Contour Design RollerMouse (standard) in the past and I’ve found them to be great for creating less stress on my own hands.

On the topic of keyboards, they looked at Belkin, Kensington, Satek, BenQ, Logitech, and Microsoft.  And they rated the Logitech Cordless Desktop MX3100 with 4.5 out of 5; and the Microsoft Optical Desktop Elite for Bluetooth a 5 out of 5 with an Editor’s Choice Award.  I haven’t used any of these specific models, but I have a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse/Keyboard combo at home that has worked out pretty well for me.
