The Jersey Boys Tour opening night in San Francisco was on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006 and it was an amazing experience. Christy and I had an extremely fun time, and we really appreciate all the kind words of encouragement from podcast listeners that we met.

The open night performance was very good. The cast was on fire, the band was rocking, and everyone did an amazingly top notched job.  The crowd was extremely enthusiastic and supportive.  It was also extremely cool at the end of the show to see the full cast on stage with Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Bob Crewe.

From what I’ve been able to tell from the reviews, the critics enjoyed it also: MercuryNews, Examiner.com, TalkingBroadway, TheaterMania, ContraCostaTimes, InsideTheBayArea, and San Franciso Chronicle, Several bloggers have also done some must read posts here: Eric Gutman, brooklynknitchick, EmilyStyle, LoveToEatandTravel, & Jersey Boys Blog.

From a super fan’s perspective I can safely say that you will not be disappointed seeing this tour production in San Francisco (extension coming?!?), Los Angeles, Chicago, and places yet-to-be-announced.

Christy and I have recorded our review of the show and the wonderful Cast Party afterwards.  We also got a last minute interview with Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli that we recorded before dashing off to catch our plane flight back to San Diego on Monday afternoon.

We will be posting both our ‘last night of previews’ podcast (preview blog post) and our ‘open night’ podcast ASAP.

  • Short Jersey Boys Preview Review

    December 10, 2006

Last night, Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, was the last preview show of Jersey Boys at the Curran Theatre. Today, Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006 is opening night.

As someone who has seen the show in La Jolla (three), and on Broadway (three), I have to honestly say the Jersey Boys Tour experience will not disappoint even the most harshest critic.  The four lead roles are done masterfully and with conviction.  Deven May is an irresistible Tommy DeVito. Erich Bergen nails Bob Gaudio. Michael Ingersoll captures Nick Massy. And Christopher Kale Jones dominates as Frankie Valli.

The talent of all the cast members and their hard work in preparation is very evident.  Christy and I both had ‘wow’ moments where even we were both taken aback by the professionalism and heart felt work to bring the Jersey Boys story to more and more people.

Kudos to all the folks working on the Jersey Boys – Tour and Broadway.  You are all doing amazing work, and it is quite an honor to be involved.

A new podcast with more details is in the works … stay tuned!

I had two great dinners at two very good restaurant during my recent business trip to Washington DC:

    • San Vito Restorante Italiano in Springfield (locations also in Herndon, Ashburn, and Chantilly)
    • Montana Grill in Crystal City (with locations all over the East)

I had the four cheese ravioli at San Vitos which was very cheesy and had a great sauce.  And I had the bison meatloaf at the Montana Grill which was very flavorful.

    I highly recommend both places.

  • Additional Thoughts On The Cobalt Qube

    December 2, 2006

Dave Winer reflected recently on the Cobalt Qube.

I loved the device when I got one for a quick reaction information technology (IT) infrastructure project I was responsible for back in 1999.

I used a Qube & a Snap server, and had a team of engineers and scientists running off a 24-port hub in less than a day.  It worked for nearly one year flawlessly before it was replaced by a more robust set of servers and services, but for rapid IT prototyping that enabled directory services, email, web, calendar, file sharing, discussions, etc. it was perfect from my perspective.  Better yet it met all the operational requirements.

I didn’t get too many complaints from the users who were all on Windows NT workstations running Office.  I did get a lot of grief from other IT folks about the lack of robustness, and some features issues around  integration with tools like Microsoft Outlook.  I think the cuteness and small form-factor was hard for many old-school IT folks to get warmed up to.

You can pretty much do the same thing today with open source software and any white-box PC or go completely hosted via ISPs or other service providers.  But at the time, it was just plain neat.
