I guess I am late to the game again, but it appears that handheld GPS units are getting more seriously into the consumer marketplace.

I noticed the following ads in the Sunday newspaper:

    • Best Buy with the Magellan Roadmate 7600 Touch-Screen GPS for $999.99 [also at Sears]
    • Computer City with the Garmin Etrex Legend for $169.99
    • CompUSA with Microsoft Streets & Trips with GPS Locator for $79.99
    • Big5 Sporting Good with Magellan Sportrak GPS for $299.99

I also noticed on Monday morning that the Target store in Santee, CA  in their sports dept. had a hands-on display with Garmin devices.

In addtion, my friend Tom is looking seriously at the Garmin Foretrex 101 (@Garmin).  His reasons appear to be all tactical (but that is the way he is suppose to think): attaches to your wrist, with a glance you get the data you need, low profile, waterproof, outputs formats you need, and uses standard batteries.  Only draw back is no color screen. [Steve: "Also no maps?"]

If you want to buy any of these units via Amazon then click here:

  • Recommendation: Capouch on Asterisks @ IT Conversations

I just finished listening to "Brian Capouch – Asterisk Open-Source VoIP PBX" and it is very good.  Well worth the time invested.  I have to agree that Asterisk definitely has a serious buzz.  In summary:

Asterisk is the open source Voice-over-IP solution that everyone’s talking
about, and at OSCON Scott Mace talked to Brian Capouch, the author of the
forthcoming Addison-Wesley book about Asterisk. Capouch discusses why Asterisk is spreading like wildfire, has hooks for video and presence extensions and why Skype is "evil incarnate." [SOURCE: "IT Conversations News: October 10, 2005" newsletter]

  • One Year Of Podcasting

It has been one year since I did my first podcast.  On October 8th, 2004 I did an internal for work audio MP3.   And on the 10th of October 2004, I did my first Tech Rag Tear Outs.

Thanks for everyone who has been listening and supporting this effort.   It has been very fun.

BTW … there have also been 145 Tech Tidbits Daily podcasts produced via TechNewsRadio.com since Feb. 08, 2005.  Also something I am working on "tenatively" called Tech Blurbs for possible distribution on other mediums like KYOU or Podshow.com’s Sirius radio is a remix of Tech Tidbits Daily with no ads.

New motto … "Have content, will travel?!?"

  • Yahoo Announces Podcasting Services

Yahoo has announced some new services for podcasting.  You can learn more via this interview by John Furrier at Podtech with Yahoo’s Geoff Ralston, Chief Product Officer.

The search feature seems to work: TechNewsRadio, and "tech podcasts".

But "tech news radio" doesn’t work to my advantage.  Also, last week’s podcast mentioning Odeo didn’t turn up in an "Odeo" search.

  • Punk Attitude DVD Commentary Cover Differences

The U.S. release of Punk Attitude DVD documentary has a different cover than the "rest of the world" release.  This probably happens all the time.  But I thought it was funny.

    Some detials:

    • Contributors include Tommy Ramone (The Ramones), Siouxsie Sioux (Siouxsie and the Banshees), Mick Jones (The Clash), David Johansen (New York Dolls) and Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols).
    • There’s also insight from influential observers including the cult film director, Jim Jarmusch, the writer Jon Savage and top US rock photographer Bob Gruen.
    • The commentary is interspersed with excellent archive footage and underpinned by a stellar soundtrack including music by The Sex Pistols, Jimi Hendrix, Lou Reed, The Buzzcocks, Black Flag, The Clash, Patti Smith, Blink 182 and Limp Bizkit among many others.

I am not sure if I am going to get it or not.  Since it is a documentary, I wonder if the library has it?

First up it was almost one year ago that I did my first podcast.  On Oct. 8th, 2004 I did an internal for work podcast .  And on the 10th of Oct. I did my first Tech Rag Tear Outs.  Thanks for everyone who has been listening and supporting this effort.

Let’s examine some recent computer network security news:

    • There is a new book from the "Stealing the Network" series called "How to Own an Identity" . The other books in the series were entitled: "How to Own the Box" and "How to Own a Continent".  This book is written by: Timothy Mullen, Johnny Long, Riley Eller, Ryan Russell, Chris Hurley, Brian Hatch, Raven Alder, Jay Beale, Tom Parker, and Jeff Moss. This book looks at how a hacker group trieds to evade law enforcement and cover their tracks ultimately hoping to vanish into thin air. (ISBN: 1-59749-006-7)
    • There is a great presentation entitled Identity 2.0 given at the recent OSCON 2005 conference that is definitely worth checking out.  It is posted in Flash, QuickTime, or Windows Media formats.
    • Please check out Web Application Security Consortium’s Web Security Threat Classification material in English, Japanese, Spanish, and Turkish. This is a cooperative effort to clarify and organize the threats to the security of a web site, and to describe these issues in a consistent way so that application developers, security professionals, software vendors, and compliance auditors are all on the same page.

Today we look at something a little out of the mainstream of information technology professionals from one of my favorite newsletters:  Innovation Weekly which reports on trends, strategies, and innovations in business and technology, and is sponsored in part by Norwich University, Animatrix, and their loyal subscribers. The editors are John Gehl and Suzanne Douglas.  It has a yearly $18 subscription feed.

The article is entitled: "MIND CONTROL MOVES AHEAD" and it summarizes an article originally published in Nature (27Sep05).  To summarize the summary of the original: a new brain wave detection cap is being used for a brain-computer interface in Austria.  The effort is using a tool called Virtual Cave to create and interact with a virtual world where one’s concentration on imaging an outcome is exercised.  There are probably hundreds of potential uses, including helping stroke victims.

Thanks to the 147 subscribers at ODEO for subscribing and listening.  I hope you are enjoying the content.

eBooks, while not commercially very successful, still continue to be created and marketed.  A new one recently caught my eye … but I can’t remember the source, probably Engadget or Gizmodo.

The company producing the units is called JINKE, and the units of potential interest are the V2 eBook that runs something called WOLF OS (proprietary?) and the upcoming V8 eBook that will run both WOLF OS and will support LINUX.  The units can apparently read DOC, XLS, PPT, IMAGES, HTML, TXT, and play audio material like MP3s.

There is also an available SDK for purchase, and the company is apparently very interested in OEM’ing solutions for other companies.

I thought the devices might be interesting "NewsPods" offering a combo of integrated HTML or rich Internet formats and podcasting.

My name is Steve and I’m a podcast junkie …

Just loaded up 23 hours and 7 minutes of new podcasts on the iRiver.  I had to delete 1.2-GBs of stuff out of the currently podcast library because of either interest or behind too many editions to catch up.

I think I’m going to have to do a lot of fast forwarding to get through all this in a meaningful amount of time.

    What did I load up?
