Today’s show (Jersey Boys Podcast #016 for Saturday, April 15, 2006) is the first in several in-person interviews my wife Christy and I recorded during our very recent trip to New York City.

The first interview is with John Lloyd Young who plays Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys Broadway.

Questions include: What is your favorite thing about Jersey Boys? What is your routine like? How did you get started in theatre? What are some your goals as an actor? What are some of your challenges with being successful?

Song segments played thanks to Rhino Records:

    • "A Sunday Kinda Love" [Cast CD]
    • "Moody’s Mood For Love" [Cast CD]
    • "My Mother’s Eyes" [Cast CD]

Other Links mentioned in the podcast:

    • Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the Phyllis Newman Women’s  Health Initiative
    • Billboard Broadway Top Album Chart
    • Jersey Boys eBay Auction
    • Jersey Boys Broadway Frappr Map

    We also discuss briefly:

    • Some buzz about the "doubling" of some of the songs in Jersey Boys, and
    • Michael Longoria upcoming concert date in NYC

  • What Is The Bother About Doubling?!?

    April 15, 2006

    +

    +

    +

NY Post has an article by Michael Riedel on some reported "doubling" of some songs in Jersey Boys.  John Lloyd Young has posted a response detailing the "doubling" endeavors underway with Jersey Boys on his blog.  There is also some interesting analysis from The Stage Online (out of the UK).

    The official response is:

    "The authors of JERSEY BOYS
require any actor playing Frankie Valli (not specifically John Lloyd
Young) and other featured actors in the show to have a second voice
accompany them at certain moments during the show to recreate the
authentic sound of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
    The
multiple voice technique was pioneered on the original Four Seasons
records, and is talked about and explained in the show as part of the
    story of JERSEY BOYS!
Everything in JERSEY BOYS is sung live. Everyone who appears to be singing on-stage is singing live. There are no tapes or click tracks. Accompanying vocals are performed by members of the cast singing on or off stage."

My own personal opinion is that if it was good enough for Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons, then it is good enough for Jersey Boys.   And I don’t think it takes away at all from anyone’s personal performance.  Everyone is doing a fabulous job and giving 100% effort show after show.

  • Lessons Learned From New York City (NYC) Vacation

    April 14, 2006

    +

    +

    +

    +

    +

    +

I learned a few lessons from our recent trip to New York City (99% in Manhattan):

    • Walking in New York is great exercise and very safe.
    • The subways in Manhattan are excellent and easy to figure out.
    • People (both locals and tourists) were extremely friendly and helpful.
    • Don’t take your pocket knife with you to the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island (it will be confiscated and re-sold on eBay).
    • SoHo is a great area for shopping, eating, and drinking.
    • Taxi drivers are very good at avoiding situations that normally result in an accident.
    • Always make sure it is safe to cross the street in the crosswalks.  Do not follow the crowd unless you know what you are doing.
    • When the hotel reviews say the rooms are very small, believe them.
    • Times Square should be experienced at least once, and then avoided if you are at all in a hurry.
    • If you want a Starbucks, and you can’t see one where you are standing, then walk a block and I’m pretty sure you’ll see one then.

A couple of errors in Podcast #015 … first up the URL for iTunes Signature Maker was incorrect, and second I said the version of the "Big Man In Town" song segment was from the Cast CD but it is not.  It is from the Anthology CD.  Thanks to Frank and Jean for the corrections.
