Spencer is 4 (going on 5) years old … here is the text from his 2006 Mother’s Day Card from pre-school (with a very nice flower painting on the front):

My Mom’s name is … "Christy".

    She is … "7" … years old.

    She weighs … "72" … pounds.

    Her hair is … "brown".

She likes to wear … "the same things, she wears every day, blue jeans."

She likes to eat … "salad and roast beef."

She really likes to … "plant the garden."

She does not like to … "help me clean my room."

Her job is … "watching over us and doing emails on the computer."

Together my Mom and I like to … "go to the park and play."

    I love my Mom!!!

    Happy Mom’s Day

  • Kudos to SlashdotReview.com – CmdrTaco Is Wrong

One of my favorite technology podcasts is Slashdotreview.com … it is basically a 10 minute summary of some of the key posts on Slashdot.org that I don’t always get a chance to read.

Having it in audio format for me would seem like a benefit to all parties, especially if Slashdot.org isn’t doing their own podcast.  But even if they did, one person’s perspective is as good as anyone elses.

Appartently thought Rob Malda, aka CmdrTaco, at Slashdot.org doesn’t like Slashdotreview.com very much based on his comments in http://twit.tv/floss3.  I highly recommend reading the comments associated with FLOSS#3 before investing much time in listening.  There wasn’t much tech substance, and to be honest I wish I could get a refund on my time.

There is a new article on the Wall Street Journal Online about Al Pacino doing a podcast to promote his new theater production, but more importantly in the third paragraph there is a mention of the Jersey Boys Podcast. Amazing!

[Thanks to Gordon at Jersey Boys Broadway for details about the mention!]

I just blogged a mini-link fest that included a link to an article on Wall Street Journal Online about Al Pacino doing a podcast, and when I went to read the article it turns out my Jersey Boys Podcast is mentioned in the third paragraph!  WOW! 🙂

After checking my email, I also got a notification from Jersey Boys Broadway about the link also. Very cool!

  • Digital Picture Frames vs. PSP

    May 7, 2006

    +

    +

I’ve always wanted digital photo/picture frames to become more mainstream.  It seemed so logical to me.

It looks like prices are really dropping and they aren’t requiring those silly subscription service models. Here is a summary of some ads I saw in the Sunday paper:

    • Linens-N-Things: $99.99 with a 5.6" LCD screen, works with digital media cards (#NV-560, LNT.COM, #18976001)
    • Best Buy: Westinghouse 8" LCD Screen for $229.99
    • Ritz Camera: PhotoShare 7" LCD; supports Mac&PC downloads or memory card for $99.99
    • Ritz Camera: 7" Digital Photo Frame with MP3 player (built-in speakers, earphone jack, video output, plus remote control) for $199.99.  Also supports media cards like: SD, MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Microdrive, and CF Memory
    • CompUSA.com: 8" Memoryvue Digital Photo Frame for $199.99 (after rebates).  Supports CF, SD, MMC, and Memory Stick cards.  Also plays MP3s.

An alternative should be noted that if you are going to spend ~$200, you might want to pick up a Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP). They are now selling for $199.99.  It seems to be the biggest bang for $200 out there.

This Tech Rag Tear Outs analysis segment from TechNewsRadio.com is sponsored by  O’Reilly and Associates Safari Bookshelf online technical library.

In summary this podcast is focused on: some upcoming conferences, a new KVM that supports dual-head video, wireless routers, some open source and freeware news & tools, and some integration info about Apple and Oracle.

The technical links mentioned in this podcast include:

    • Project Management Fundamentals will be in Anaheim, California from June 21-23, 2006.
    • VoiceCON Fall 2006 — The Forum for Business IP Telephone  will be in San Franciso, CA from August 21-24
    • Hall Research Model MC4-H2 "Dual-Head" KVM Switch
    • Junxion now has official support for Cingular Wireless and Sprint using these technologies: EVDO, EDGE, WIFI, HSDPA, GPRS
    • Trilogy Equity Partners
    • OpenDocument Format ISO 26300 available via OpenOffice.org and NeoOffice
    • Network Notepad v4.4.9  vs. Visio or NetViz or SmartDraw
    • Apple FED-TALK mailing list
    • Apple and Rotech utilize: Oracle Database 10g RAC, OS X Server, and Xserve RAID

Also I highly recommend the following beers:

    • Rogue Kell Irish Style Lager
    • Ridgeway Brewing Very Bad Elf Special Reserve Ale
    • Weisse Hacker-Pschorr Traditioinal Wheat Ale

Lastly, I also have to recommend Theodore Roosevelt Island which is part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway that is operated by the Virgina Turkey Run Park for a run or walk if you are in the Washington DC area.  It was fun and relaxing.

It should also be noted that at the end of the podcast is a fun song from The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd called "One Meatball!" By Dr. Steve & Fidgert.

  • Survived the DC Trip – Theodore Roosevelt Island, Beer Recommendation, & W.E.B. Griffin

    May 6, 2006

I managed to survive and still have a good time on my recent business trip to Washington DC (the way back was DCA to Dallas to SAN).

One of the main reasons I had a good time, was that I managed to sneak in three great runs in the Rossyln area of Virgina. One of the better ones included an exploration of Theodore Roosevelt Island which is part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway that is operated by the Virgina Turkey Run Park.

I’m also going to have to recommend the following beers:

    • Rogue’s Kell Irish Style Lager

    • Ridgeway Brewing’s Very Bad Elf Special Reserve Ale
(7.5% AlcVol which is based on a 1795 Thames Valley recipe)

    • Weisse Hacker-Pschorr Traditional Wheat Ale

Lastly, I have to admit I’m becoming a fan of "reading fiction books" while in transit, vice pulling out the work Tablet PC or the personal iBook or a tech journal.  Right now, I am busy quickly turning pages of W.E.B. Griffen’s By Order Of The President.  This is my first Griffen book (definitely not my last Griffen book). I had heard his name before, but never got introduced until I listened to his recent podcast at Pritzker Military Library.

    • Kreg Steppe has a new podcast called Valid Syntax
    • Chuck Tomasi has been doing a great job with the Gmail Podcast
    • And if you are interesting in computer network security, then you need to check out Pauldotcom.com

In addition, the rest of the technology podcast space is very busy. Here is a quick "link fest" summary:

    • Podcast Academy 3 in Santa Clara, California will be June 15-16, 2006
    • Phil Windley is taking over some key functions from Doug Kaye at IT Conversations
    • Podcasting Legal Guide
    • Salesforce.com has an AppExchange podcast (registration required)
    • MacWorld Podcasts and Inside Mac Games are good for Mac fans [best one is still MacCast, followed by the Typical Mac User Podcast, and then Mac Review Cast]
    • IBM’s Investor Podcasts
    • InfoWorld has a lot of podcasts referenced in their search engine
    • Wired has been offering podcasts since Feb06
    • MakeZine on "Podcasting"

Lastly there are some actual "new" technologies that are improving the podcast experience (from both listener and production standpoints) they include:

    • Pickle Player
    • Yahoo! Publisher Network
    • Podcaster 1.1.3 (Macintosh)
    • Podcast Monkey 1.0 (Macintosh)
    • FeedForAll 2.0b2 (Macintosh)
