  • Junxion Box Testing – Broadband Wireless Networking

One of my many tasks at work is to try out the latest and greatest in being able to stay connected to Internet no matter where I’m at in the United States.

One of the things I have been wanting to test for a while is the Junxion Box  JB-110b (Ethernet & Wi-Fi LAN) with both support for Cingular/AT&T and Verizon, and on Wednesday of last week it came in.  It works with the 2 Cingular cards I have, and and also the new EVDO card.

So, my intial testing is very positive.  One thing I need to do is check the firewall router option to use one of the Ethernet ports to be on a wired broadband connection like DSL/Cable, and then utilize the broadband wireless card as backup if the main connection goes out.  This sounds great for a continuity of business setup.

Questions? Here is a picture from the back.

UPDATE: It seems like someone at Gnomedex must of had on of these broadband routers.  I noticed recent traffic on the topic from Doc Searls, and Dave Winer.

I would love for a way to sign up to an RSS feed via Firefox directly into Newsgator Inbox (Microsoft Outlook plugin) on my Toshiba M400 Tablet PC.

Anyone know a way?  Am I just a bad Google searcher?!?

UPDATE: Thanks to Kevin Devin, I did some more searching directly in the Newsgator forums and found an answer.

  • Missing Pieces for MindJet’s MindManager on Mac

    July 3, 2006

I have been trying to do more and more with MindManager on the Macintosh the last couple of days because I wanted to migrate from OmniOutliner to MindManger for doing Jersey Boys Podcast pre-production and show notes on my iBook.

Some things that I really like on the Windows version of MindManager appear to be missing.  They include:

    • Outliner view
    • Input and output OPML
    • Output to rich web content (or even simple HTML) [only works with current version of IE]

The integration of the Windows version with Office, especially with Outlook, is also something I use a great deal on Windows but that is pretty platform specific, and I can forgive that.

But the other ones are pretty important for future releases, especially the rich web content to other browsers and operating systems.

On a side note, as a Beta test of MindManager for the Macintosh I didn’t see these missing features because I guess I didn’t really do a great job as a Beta tester.  I’ll need to make sure the next time I sign up to Beta test, I actually have a proposed plan in my mind for really using the tool other than installation and mild canned testing.

I have run into some snags with advertising on TechNewsRadio.com with O’Reilly & Associates Safari Bookshelf. More details in the next podcast.

It should also be noted I have also unsubscribed from the Safari Bookshelf service that I personally signed up for because of this issue.

  • More Tech Podcast Resources and Reviews (TNPR-003)

    June 30, 2006

Podcasting is a big deal in the technology world (as if you didn’t know that already).

Not only because techies are early adopters, but also because it is a great medium for getting technical information that you can consume while either at your computer (multi-tasking) or away from your computer (mobile).

Here are some new pointers that crossed my inbox over the last week or so:

    • APC White Paper Podcasts via their Promo Site
    • Infoworld’s Storage Sprawl podcast (sponsored by HP)
    • Chief Security Officer (CSO) Online has podcasts
    • Information Week has TechWebCasts
    • SonicWall is podcasting [NOTE: The site is undergoing work and should be back up on July 15th, 2006 according to the PR person I contacted]
    • eWeek is publishing podcasts (topics and number seems to be in flux)
    • Network Computing (which is aligned with Information Week) is podcasting with TechWebCasts

Another big thing for the tech podcast marketplace is news that Robert Scoble is leaving Microsoft for PodTech.net, which has raised a great deal of recent VC funding.  The thing I like about Robert is that he already posted some ideas on improving PodTech even before really officially starting over there.

As an "independent" technology podcaster who strives to be as transparent as possible, I think PodTech’s biggest issue is going to be credibility around their analysis of a product, service, or organization they are producing for. Otherwise they will only be viewed as paid info-commercials with a one-way message.

Creating dialog and trust is going to be a big deal for them.

It is funny to me that this question and the answer to this is a Top Tip at Extreme Tech, but it is.

And of course the answer is – "NO" – you can listen to podcasts with any device that plays an MP3 including many car stereos via CDROM.

An interesting side note is that Mike @ The Mike Tech Show recently did a show on MP3 players that his listeners were using.  The diversity is pretty amazing. Here is the list via his blog:

    • Samsung Yp-T7
      or YP-F2JZW

  • TECH NEWS RADIO #294 | 060628 | EMC – The Storage Giant Gets Bigger

    June 28, 2006

    +

    +

    +

    +

    +

    +

This podcast is all about EMC.com.  We examine content from the following industry trade magazines: Network World, Information Week, InfoWorld, Computer Reseller News, eWeek, Federal Computer Week, and Computer World; and try to synthesize the information into a systems analysis quick-look summary.

Here is a list of companies that we mention from the research that EMC has recently had an acquisition announcement, partnership agreement, or a technology purchase from:

RSA Security, Dell, Arkivio, StoredIQ, Kashya Interlink Group, Acxiom, Internosis, Acartus, Captiva, Maranti, Rainfinity, Legato Systems, Documentum, and Smarts.

EMC has also announced the following new or updated products in recent months:

    • Clariion AX150 and AX150i
    • Insignia Solution Data Protection
    • Clariion Disk Library
    • SAFE 2.2 (for Microsoft Exchange)
    • Smarts Application Discovery Manager
    • Assessment Service for Storage Security
    • Symmetrix DMX-3 storage array systems (more info)

From our perspective, EMC definitely seems to have a structured roadmap to transition from ‘just a storage solutions provider’ to a full service ‘data classification system’ with hooks from the bottom of the protocol stack to the top.

This podcast is sponsored by O’Reilly and Associates Safari Bookshelf online technical library.

eWeek recently had a pretty positive review (slideshow) by Jim Rpoza on the Opera 9 browser that is now free, and can be extended using widgets.   I have downloaded a copy, and I’m going to try it out on my Windows XP test system.

    Anyone else using it?!?
