  • Tracking What You Eat – Lose What You Want

In the blog world, there have been a lot of posts recently from folks like Jason Calacanis on their weight loss successes and recommendations.

I have some similar experience that I’d like to share. Even with all the exercise I do, I still have to monitor my overall calorie intake and expenditures if I want to maintain what I consider a healthy weight.

The idea I’ve been following to maintain my weight is by taking in no more calories in a week then I use up.

In this system, if you want to loose weight then you must have a deficit of calories.  The higher the deficit the more weight one can lose.  It is my experience that you can achieve deficits by eating healthy portions of the right types of food and exercise.

The tool I have been using to do this is Diet Organizer for Windows.   It helps with tracking meals, the calorie counts, statistics, and logging.  The interface is pretty straight forward and simple, but it does have some great power features like creating template meals or reoccurring food choices.  The data entry process  has been streamlined as much as possible to make it fast and easy.

I have used this twice over the last couple of years to lose 10-15 pounds.  The most recent time was last spring when my weight went up to 189.  I was able to get down to 176 in less than 10 weeks eating healthy foods in quantities that made better sense.

Since then I’ve been using it periodically to track a week at a time to make sure I am still in the approximately zero calorie gain after a week. I have been within plus or minus 3 pounds of 176 since mid-summer so it does help in re-syncing with good eating habits if you follow your overall calorie intake and expenditure.

One clarification, I really only used this tool to focus on overall calories and trying to maintain the recommendation weight/calorie balance  from Diet Organizer based on my body size and age.  You can also dig in deeper with the software to measure types of fats, sugars, and other items.  Each person is different, but I think this tool is flexible enough to support many different types of scenarios.

Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or other suggestions.

  • Recommendation – Mobile Project Pouch Containers

David Allen (author of Getting Things Done) recently introduced some new mobile pouches for collecting and organizing ‘stuff.’  The are in orange (so they can’t be missed) and are called "Getting Zip Pouch."

I’ve been using an alternative from The Container Store called "Zippered Vinyl & Mesh Pouches."  I usually carry two in my backpack – one to track my Getting System File Folders, and the other to capture and store reference material.  I really like that they are semi-clear and you can see what is inside them.

I have to highly recommend them as an alternative.  They also seem to be lower in price, and you can probably pick them up at your local store.

  • Coffee Bean Storage Suggestions

    December 30, 2007

Kevin Devin and I have been trading emails on coffee bean (whole or ground) storage options since we are both purchasing some beans from Kevin’s brother who lives in Alaska and works at roaster Cafe Del Mundo.

Kevin found this recommendation, which I have summarized to:

    1. Store beans (whole or ground) in an air tight container
    2. Store the air tight container in a cool place like a pantry with no direct sunlight on the container. If pantry gets warm, then use a refrigerator but not a freezer.
    3. The sooner you go from bean to grounds to brewing the better.

    Thoughts? Suggestions? Other opinions?

It is with a very heavy heart that I need to let listeners of TechNewsRadio.com know of the passing of Marc Orchant on 12/9/2007.

Marc was a great technology friend who I was very privileged to meet in person and share some time with at eTech 2007.  In fact the interview with Attensia that I recorded at that conference was because of Marc’s introductions.  He was always looking out for others and trying to help where he could. Thank you!

My prayers are with his family and friends.  He will be very missed.

Alert San Diego is letting residents and businesses update their contact information for reverse 911 calls to include an email address, cell phone number, VoIP, etc.   That is pretty forward thinking IMHO.

In the last podcast I posted, #340, I mentioned Eric Mack’s recent interview with Marc Orchant was a must listen to.  And it still is, but I did want to let TechNewsRadio.com listeners know that Marc Orchant is very ill.  He suffered a very serious heart attack on Sunday, 12/2 and is still in very critical condition in the hospital.

The best place I’ve found for updates is via my friend Michael Sampson’s Effective Collaboration site.

Please keep Marc, his family, and his friends in your prayers.

I could not say this with more conviction, Marc is one of the nicest, most helpful technologists I have met through podcasting & blogging, and I am pulling for him with all the effort I can muster.

  • Some New Cold War History Recommendations

    December 7, 2007

    +

I am a big history buff. I am particularly interested in stories about World War II and The Cold War.

I came across a bunch of recently released Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) docs at the Federation of American Scientists (FAS.org):

    • "The Secret War in Korea, June 1950 to June 1952," March 1964 [pdf]
    • "Record of Paramilitary Action Against the Castro Government of Cuba, 17 March 1960 – May 1961," May 1961 [pdf]
    • "The Evolution of Ground Paramilitary Activities at the Staff Level, October 1949-September 1955," November 1968 [pdf]
    • "The Berlin Tunnel Operation, 1952-1956," 24 June 1968 [pdf]

They all have some pretty interesting information in them.  I am fascinated by considering what the redacted parts contain.

The Cold War has many different angles and perspectives. One of the other resources that is really interesting is from Tony Kahn over at WGBH’s Morning Stories podcast.  Tony produced the following series called "BlackListed" (RSS):

In October 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee opened its hearing into Communist influence in the movie business and promptly denounced 19 prominent directors, producers, screenwriters, and actors as enemies of the state. One of them was Hollywood screenwriter Gordon Kahn, whose films include All Quiet on the Western Front and The African Queen.

In this six-part personal history of the Hollywood Blacklist, Gordon Kahn’s son, Morning Stories producer Tony Kahn, tells the story of his father’s 15 years of persecution and the fear that followed him, his family, and thousands of other Americans for being accused of having the wrong political ideas.

I have currently listened to three of six podcasts, and I am really enjoying this very well produced audio program.  No matter what your political views this is is a podcast that should not be missed.
