The article "Brewery closures in San Diego County rise in 2024: Economic challenges and negative consumer trends are catching up with brewers, but local beer industry is still the envy of the nation" really does a complete job of outlining where we are today.

This is pretty unfortunate news (if it is true) –
Trump team is questioning civil servants at National Security Council about commitment to his agenda
I get that your appointed leaders & those who need Congressional should be committed to your agenda/vision/direction/etc., but applying this type of "loyalty test" to those in the civil service is really short-sighted and potentially risky.
Surrounding yourself with a bunch of "YES" men and women has not been a historically successful leadership strategy.
The current Civilian Oath Of Office should be enough:
I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

On January 6, 2021, the U.S. capital was attacked, and it was one of the most challenging days in American history.
A rioting mob attempted to halt the certification of the 2020 presidential election by assaulting the U.S. Capitol because they incorrectly believed the 2020 election was stolen. The election was not stolen.
This was an unprecedented assault on American democracy.
More than 140 law enforcement officers were injured in the attack.
As of 1/6/2025, 1,580 individuals have been charged with federal crimes from the riot. According to the Washington Post, the status of those charged are:
- 13 = Proud Boys/Oath Keepers have charges related to felony "seditious conspiracy." Twelve have been convicted, and one is pending.
- 379 = charged and convicted with felony "assaulting police or members of the media."
- 287 = charged and convicted with felony "federal rioting, property destruction, theft, obstruction, or firearms counts."
- The rest (~60%) = were charged and convicted with misdemeanors "such as trespassing or disorderly conduct."
The loss of life was particularly tragic. Here is a summary from the Washington Post:
A female rioter was shot and killed by police inside the Capitol, and one officer succumbed to two strokes that were partly attributed to the stress of the attack. Three people died as a result of medical emergencies suffered during the riot. Four police officers later died by suicide.
Pardoning these convicted criminals is not acceptable. And continuing to prosecute the remaining ~300+ defendants should continue.
The members of the House of Representatives who investigated the Capital assault should not be attacked or persecuted.
Then-Vice President Mike Pence should be held in high esteem for certifying the 2020 election results correctly, given that many in the rioting crowd were bent on bodily harm to him.

Image generated by Microsoft Co-PilotThis year, my daily morning routine will include reading and journaling these two books:
- “You Can Count On God: 365 Devotions” by Max Lucado
- “The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living by Ryan Holiday & Stephen Hanselman
This is my fifth year going through The Daily Stoic meditations. This year, I plan to pray through these golden nuggets of wisdom. I got this idea while reading Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. A section in this book distinguished between “philosophy” and “theology” in a way that resonated with me.
You can see my 2024 plan here (it links to previous posts).
I am reading these books on my Kindle Paperwhite (which I also recommend if you want a dedicated ebook reader).

As a David Allen Getting Things Done (GTD) Trainer at my work, I have found many options for creating a trusted GTD System.
One solid consideration is to use a PDF or paper-based approach.
For $29, you can do this for 2025 using the GTD Organizer:
I have used this approach from time to time in the past when a paper system was more accessible. Editing PDFs makes this easy to use and platform-independent (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc).

I set up a "classroom" record player in the kitchen during the Christmas season and play primarily old Christmas albums from Thrift Stores during the season.
By Xavier Romero-Frias – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0The Twelve Days of Christmas song will come on pretty frequently, and one day, we start discussing what day before Christmas you would have to start sending presents based on the song and if the last day of presents is Christmas or Christmas Eve.
A quick Gemini query (aka ask AI) taught us something we didn't know about the song:
We were also recently exposed to this funny chain of letters from someone (aka Emily) who got the Twelve Days of Christmas.
