DARPA’s Grand Challenge was held today. I think that many are surprised by the outcome – only two of the entries made it more than 7 miles (course length was 142 miles). It was nice to see it unfold online via Dann Sheridan’s Weblog and IT Conversations.

I am pretty happy with the Windows XP “pseudo Longhorn command bar tool” called Desktop Sidebar, but the latest Maximum PC magazine had a short blurb on a competitor called Smartbar XP.

I don’t think that PocketThinker is going to work out for me in its’ current form. I have a strong need for an outliner that has powerful import/export options and will work in sync with a Windows client and a PocketPC/iPAQ. The three other tools I have been trying include: ListPro (Windows/Pocket PC/Palm); S’MORE (Windows/PocketPC); and Streamliner (PocketPC). Right now I am leaning towards S’MORE.

I have a question — Why haven’t the SIMCITY folks made a SIMNET? I think they have all the tools in SIMCITY to create a virtual network environment for testing, planning, evaluating not only networks but also servers, services, and storage. This would be not only fun to play with as a techie but also could be a serious business tool.
