David Coursey’s "Do New Apple Products Make the Grade? @ eWeek is an interesting read.

I think the Mac Mini is pretty compelling concept as a primary Windows user who was a seriously dedicated Macintosh zealot in the past.  I like the "bundled" software, but I don’t think that 256-MBs of RAM is going to keep me happy for long.  I might have to make a trip to the Apple store to check it out in person. [UPDATE: ExtremeTech has some more thoughts on pricing and what $499 really buys.]

The iPod Shuffle is a nice form factor, with good storage size and features that will be good for listening to music and podcasts.  I just got a Samsung Yepp YP-T5V (256-MBs) which I am pretty happy with so I am pretty sure I am not going to switch unless I do a swap with my wife (who is using my older Creative Labs Muvo 128-MBs).

The 2nd Orange County Podcast User Group dinner was held last night (Wednesday, January 12, 2005) in Newport Beach, CA.  It was hosted by Michael Geoghegan @ MWGBlog (Reel Reviews) at his house.  So, we got to see his "movie and podcasting room".  It is very impressive.  Thanks for hosting!

The other podcasters in crime there included: Tim Bourquin & Emile Bourquin (Podcast Brothers), Craig Patchett, J. Craig Williams, Leigh Older, and Brian Clark.

Leigh, Brian, and Jay Selmen (who wasn’t able to make it) are doing graperadio.com.

It was fun talking podcasting tradecraft, and podcasting future directions with folks who have similar interests.  I highly recommend if you are a podcaster, to find other podcasters near you and have a user group meeting on a monthly basis.

  • How Many Podcast Directories Are Enough

It seems semi-hypocritical of me to be complaining after being the primary suggester of the techpodcasts.org site idea, but how many "generic" podcast directories do we need?

As a podcaster who wants to make sure people can know about my podcast it is a major pain.

Here is a sample that I collected:

    • ipodder.org (accessible via OPML)
    • audio.weblogs.com (need to ping for new podcasts)
    • podcastingnews (PHP forms)
    • podcastalley (allows for ranking)
    • podcast.net
    • penguinradio (form submission)
    • podcastcentral
    • podcastbunker
    • podcasts724
    • podfly

  • Tech Rag Tear Outs Podcast

Tech Rag Tear Outs Podcast is a regular information technology (IT) professional focused podcast.

During a normal week, I get print editions of magazines like InfoWorld, eWeek, Informatino Week, Network World, Forbes, PC World, Maximum PC, etc. I typically "rip" out the articles of interest and utilize them at work.

But now I am taking these items and briefly summarizing them in a podcast, posting them to this blog, and making them available for automatic subscription download via a podcast client (I use Doppler on Windows and I have heard good things from Apple users about iPodderX).

I also post to the automatic subscription link some periodic seperate commentary and music content in podcast format that I find interesting.

Comments, suggestions, feedback, etc. are always appreciated (see PodcastAlley for some).  You can send me direct feedback via email: {sholden [at] pobox.com} or call 206-337-1533 or SKYPE me at: steve.holden.

As a self-confessed micro-brew beer snob, I have found the monthly email from Real Beer to be very interesting to keep up with the latest news about the beer industry.

I also noticed there are some beer podcasts that I need to check out.

And I apologize to those who have noted that I sometimes have an official beer for my podcast Tech Rag Tear Outs but I don’t always say why I recommend it.  I’ll try to work on that.

On The Media is using this icon:

    Others seem to be using:

  • A List Of Small Handhelds That Can Run Frontier?

    January 11, 2005

    +

    +

    +

    +

    +

    +

In a recent Dave/Adam request for comments on possible MP3 players that could be the platform to develope to, I think they were looking for devices that could run Frontier.  Right now that is Mac or Windows mobile platforms and you’d be probably limited to devices in the following form factors:

    • Pepper Computer
    • HP Tablet PC TC1100 (without the keyboard)
    • Sony Vaio U50/U750P
    • OQO Model 01 Ultra PC
    • JVC Mobile Mini Note PC
    • Apple iBook G4

I think that Frontier, from what I understand, could probably run pretty easily under Windows XP Embedded, and I know there is a great deal of interest in porting to Linux.

I think that moving forward on Linux has the biggest option for widespread support unless Microsoft really moves hard to make Windows XP Embedded more accessible.

Another option is trying to re-write Frontier for PocketPC/Windows Mobile with support for handhelds, digital media players, and cell phones; but that is probably a big effort.

I think there are some cool little visualization customizations that are are popping up for podcasters.

    Here is one for podkast.com:

And MWGBlog figured out (at least I saw it at his site first) how to do something to help users of a podcast to vote via PodCastAlley:

    • Support the podcast, vote now for Tech Rag Tear Outs
      at Podcast Alley.

      Awesome! (5)Great (4)Good (3)Ok (2)Poor (1)
Just click on the vote button.

You can also link to your review on the The New, New Podcast Review: .

And finally folks using TypePad can get some search options via Technorati:

I was lucky to get to participate in a "tech chat" by Kevin Devin’s In The Trenches (ITT) podcast.  It turned out pretty good and it was fun.

Chuck at chuckchat.com (2005-01-09) has some details on the pain and suffering we "IT pros" had in getting this recorded. UGH!!!!
