  • Missing Outlook 2003 Feature – The Beauty of the Recurring Task?!?

43 Folders notes that “MS Entourage has a handy “Recurrence Pattern” box that lets you define how often and when an item should pop up on your radar screen.”  This is a cool feature that Outlook 2003 doesn’t appear to have?!?

Picasa: Photo management software, free from Google (Find, edit, share photos) is pretty compelling software.  I just installed it on Christy’s computer and it seems to do everything we have been wanting to do with our pictures for free.

  • Jersey Boys – Amazing Musical

    January 17, 2005

My wife and got to usher for a recent performance of Jersey Boys at the La Jolla Playhouse @ UCSD.  It was absolutely amazing.

This play is based on the life story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. The production, the acting, and of course the music was fabulous.

I didn’t realize how much of a Four Seasons fan I was until this play.  I managed to pick up a copy of The Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons Anthology (2-CDs) by Rhino Records and it is also very good.

UPDATE: We are pretty insane on this one.  Christy and I paid for tickets to sit in seats on 2nd of January 2005.  And then we bought standing room only tickets for the last night of the show which was on Sunday (1-16-2005).

The amazing gift about this was when we ushered we got to sit in row B on Stage Left.  Our tickets for the 2nd were Row B Stage Right.  And our standing room only tickets turned into row E, right in the middle of the stage because people didn’t show up. So effectively we saw this production from every angle.

Christy was also able to get get two signatures: Bob Gaudio (one of the original Four Seasons) and R. Robert Spencer (who played Nick Massi).

  • Fair Use of RSS Feeds (How Far Is Legal?)

There has been a lot of talk recently — see Denise Howell for a great summary; also J. Craig Williams — about how other blogs can or can not utilize someone’s RSS feed.

I think Robert Scoble started this, but it is something that I was wondering recently.

Here is a good example of one of my posts getting sucked into another site and then displayed (with ads around them): http://www.lcd-monitor-news.com/small_secondary_lcd_archive.shtml.

BTW … both Denise and Craig are excellent podcasters.

Greg Reinacker notes on his weblog that CNBC had a news segment on RSS that included a mention of Newsgator.

It showed up in my "new media" folder via Blogdigger+Doppler+Engadget, and I turned the video into an mp3.  Enjoy!

  • Corante Example of Bad RSS Icon Usage?

    January 17, 2005

There was a podcast dinner up in Seattle area and I was looking at who was there.

I noticed that that Alex Williams from Corante was there.  I had it my list of things to do was to find out more about Corante because Mike G at (MWGBlog.com – Reel Reviews Podcast) mentioned he had participated in a one hour podcast about podcasting with via Corante.  I also think that Eric Rice has talked about Corante before on his blog … anyway …

So, if you go to the Corante site there is a nice XML button on the front of the page.  But the underlining link is to a .php page that lists out all the possible RSS feeds I might want. Unfortunately, it took me a couple of tries to add it to my aggregator (Newsgator) to figure out the error.

I think this is part of what Dave is trying to say in his post "The solution to the Yahoo problem."

I have been thinking about what I should do on my site.  Still don’t have a good answer yet.  My RSS feed is a text link to Feedburner which is a nice service.  I have a Yahoo button which has driven a couple of readers to this site.  And my podcast link is a text link.  Suggestions?

  • Feedback – The Eric Rice Show

    January 14, 2005

    +

The Eric Rice Show – Grog on everything and Sprint-Nextel (EricRiceShow-20040109_grog.mp3) is probably the worst show that Eric has ever done ‘In My Humble Opinion (IMHO)’.  The first time in a long time I actually hit the skp to the next podcast on my mp3 player.

Things I didn’t like: cursing for no particular good reason (Dave Slusher at Evil Genius Chronicles is a good example of using adult words in the right context); show was never really focused; and the banter with Grog was too insider for me to understand what they were talking about 90% of the time. [P.S. I am posting this comment here because Eric doesn’t have comments enabled.]

  • Three Great Tools: Search, IM, InfoGathering

    January 14, 2005

Renee Blodgett on her blog Down the Avenue mentions Jupiter Research’s Eric Peterson three "must have tools" for the digitally-inclined. The functional areas are: Desktop Search, Instant Messaging, and Information Gathering.  Here are my thoughts (Windows centric) …

For desktop search I use X1.  I have been using it for a while and I see no reason to switch, even to a free one.  The new recent improvements have been helpful, and tech support has been excellent resolving a few problems I have found.

On the instant messaging front I agree with both Renee and Eric that Trillian is great.  The new version 3.0 has significant improvements to the interface and setup.  I highly recommend it.

In the information gathering area, I use a lot of stuff (probably worthy of another detailed blog post) but I can not say enough about ClipMate for keeping my cut-n-paste data collected, organized, and quick to utilize.  I am also part of the Onfolio 2.0 beta and it is a great improvement to 1.0.

Newsscan (free),  Edupage (free), and Innovation ($18 a year) are examples of great email newsletters to keep up on what is going on throughout the complete technology world.

Today, Newsscan had a good pointer to something emerging in the graphics world we are all going to get exposed to: .SIF vs .JPG [via New Scientist]
