I managed yesterday to fit in a run between rain storms in Southern California and got to listen to the first The Gadget Show Podcast.  I learned something new during the listen – that Microsoft is working with laptop vendors to integrate SPOT devices into future laptops to display not only SPOT data, but also provide some information about the status of the laptop’s battery, application details, etc.  That sounds really cool.

Then later in the evening I was reading through PC Magazine (08Mar04 – page 22) and there was a mention that Oregon Scientific is working on a new weather station/alarm clock/information device that would also offer SPOT.

If you asked me, it would also be a good idea to add a mini-MP3 player, and a digital picture viewer to have the ultimate desktop accessory.

  • More Signs Of MP3 Player Growth

I noted the new numbers in a recent blog post of how many MP3 devices are "in service" in the U.S., but I have two other more obscure indicators of the growing "mainstreamness" (is that a word?) of portable media devices …

    1. Joseph Guinto has a piece on "IPOD PLAYLISTS" in Southwest Airlines Spirit in-flight magazine published for Feb05.
    2. California’s AAA Westways magazine had a detailed section on iPod and other MP3 player devices plus accessories for your car.

Note: In digging into who does the Spirit magazine, it turns out American Airlines via AA Publishing does the magazine for Southwest.  You can find out more about Joseph Guinto via Google (he seems to write a lot).

This is your Tech Tidbits Daily for Tuesday, Feb. 22nd, 2005. Today’s link is a big one if you are running Windows 2003.  Microsoft has a beta out for Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 2003, and there are a great deal of new things going to happen.  Here is one example, from the PatchManagement.org mailing list.   The post is from Susan Bradley and it is entitled "Programs that use DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model) do not work correctly after you install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (KB#89250)".  In a nutshell, all remote calls need to be authenticated to an Administrative group.  So, you may need to do some tweaking and tuning of existing users, groups, and policies to get your DCOM solutions to work post SP1.  Test early and test often is a great motto when dealing with any operating system upgrade or patch. Today’s news comes from another great technology podcast called Slashdot Review.  On their Feb. 17th show they mentioned a Slashdot item that referenced an article on Wireless Developer Network that reports that Panera Bread is now offering to their customers free Wi-Fi connections in over 570+ stores in the United States.  We think that is a bold move that could have the benefit of driving down current Wi-Fi costs to mobile professionals. My very good friend Dann Sheridan, his wife, and his daughter are going through some very tough times right now.

I am so proud of them to speak out on their troubles. Because I think they can get a great deal of hope and support from the wider community of bloggers.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Today’s link is to an important visionary short Flash presentation that came to us from Geek News Central.  This looking into the future concept was done by Robin Sloan and Matt Thompson.  It focuses on a journey from now until 2014, and how the media empires of today have effectively been replaced with the integrated information grid of the future. Check it out at: www.robinsloan.com/epic. It runs about 8 minutes. For

To be honest, before last week I recognized the name Lawrence Lessig but I hadn’t really heard him speak or read any of his books.

That was until Eric Rice posted "Lawrence Lessig – Free Culture – Chapter 4" on his podcast.

Now, Dave Slusher is reprorting via this blog post that a Lawrence Lessig podcast is in prototype.

    Definitely something worth checking out!

This is your Tech Tidbits Daily for Thursday, Feb. 17th 2005. Today’s resource link is to a free collection of scripting tools offered by Microsoft via their TechNet program.  This site is called the "Script Center" and a core tool available from this resource is called "Scriptomatic 2.0" that allows a system administrator to building VBScript, Perl, JScript, and Python scripts to better automate Windows clients, servers, network settings, and services.  One of the new features is an area completely devoted to "Scripting for Security." It should be noted that if you are thinking about starting or are doing a podcast, that Criag’s Behind The Scenes podcast is great.
