Robert Scoble did this recently to his son.  I think it is kinda neat … I am not so sure what kids will think of it.

Happy 4th of July!! Today’s podcast is going to be a little different … we play a couple of patriotic public domain performances from the "The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band" called "To The Color" and "This Is My Country".

And we give you a quick pointer to the TidBITS newsletter for the 4th of July that has an review article entitled "Apple Releases iTunes 4.9 with Podcasting Support" by Andy Affleck.  It is a good introduction to the new version and how you can use this client on both Windows and Macintosh systems to subscribe and listen to podcasts.

    From Google News:

    RSS inventor
    slams Apple’s podcast
    approach

    Tom’s Hardware Guide –
    USA

Apple aims to build podcast support directly into both the
software and iPod, but leaders in the RSS community, including the standard’s
    own creator, are …

There is a lot of stuff going on in podcast world.  The forums and mailing lists are full of things that don’t seem be focused on "open" and "working together."

RSS feeds are being redirected, content changed, data cached, etc. on copyrighted and Creative Commons protected information.  It could be just mistakes in releasing "BETA" and not ready for prime time; or it could actually be malicious.

Welcome to the free market, land grabs, backroom deals, greed, and FUD.  It is open season on the sky is falling also …  😉

Today’s podcast from TechNewsRadio.com covers  two pointers for the developers out there in tech podcast land:

    • ActiveState has announced the release of ActiveState’s ActivePerl, ActivePython, and ActiveTcl language distributions for Sun’s Solaris 10 Operating System for SPARC, x86 and x64 systems and for Mac OS X version 10.4 "Tiger".
    • Catalyst has release new editions of their VBScript and JavaScript Windows COM libraries called "SocketTools Scripting Edition and Secure Scripting Edition".

As a reminder, the next Tech Rag Tear Outs podcast will be out next week – July 8th, 2005. Have a great day.

Today’s podcast from TechNewsRadio.com covers an item from the July 2005 edition of PC Magazine.  The article is entitled "Make Your Network Safer By Attacking It: A number of excellent tools can help you find out where you’re vulnerable" by Larry Seltzer.

Professional tools mentioned include: AppDetective , Retina, and System Scanner; and check out "Network Security: Know Your Weakness" for details on these.

For self-assessment, examine: Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and NeWT Security Scanner from Tenable Network Security. There is also another open source tool called Nessus that I have had good experiences with in the past.

Bottom-line though is I highly recommend that you consider doing a vulnerability assessment on the systems you utilize and support both at work and at home.

  • Sound “Cancelling” Headphones

If you are a long term reader of this blog, you might remember that I got some Bose noise canceling headphones ($300) last year I think for my birthday, but they were stolen on our cruise in October.  I really liked them.

I went out and got a pair of Koss ($70) replacements.  And they work pretty well for the price.  But they don’t travel well. The Bose aren’t great for travel either.

So … I am trying out Sony’s MDR-NC11s (~$150, 30-day return policy at Sony Stores).

They were pretty good on the last trip.  I did figure out one thing that my left ear is slightly bigger than my right ear, so I have a large bud on the left hand side and a medium bud on the right hand side.

I did notice though that on the smaller Brasilia Emb120 prop plane that they didn’t work as well as on a "big" jet.

In my lab at work where there is a lot of background white noise from fans and such, they work pretty well … especially if you are playing music or podcasts through the headphones.
