Today we look at dtSearch which according to Networking Computing published for 7.7.2005 has released a new 7.0 version that can reportedly search a terabyte of text in less than a second.  The software can function on the desktop or via TCP/IP networking.  You can also search across indexes in a single search.  Pricing starts at $800 for five users.  You can call 1-800-483-4637 for more information.

NOTE: Sorry this one was posted late.  I made a mistake in publishing.

I was reading my son Spencer a book last night while I was trying to eat some ice cream.  Since both of my hands were full I asked him if he would turn the pages.  He said, "Yes!."

Then I read him the first page, and then the second page.  And then I said, "Next slide."

He looked at me, and turned the page.  But he wasn’t too sure if he was doing the right thing. 😉

I kept doing it by mistake all through the book.  At the end when I did it for the last time for this book he said, "Silly Dad …"

  • Update on Tecra M4 (Productivity, Bluetooth, EVDO)

My new Tecra M4 is working out pretty well. I love the big screen, speed of the unit, and having a TabletPC interface again.

Wow … my productivity is higher with the TabletPC that is for sure.

Still working issues though with Verizon to get EVDO to work.  It looks like the first generation of the PC 5220 cards have some  issues related to power consumption.  They want to swap out the "A" card with a "C" card.  There is also issues with the "B" card.  So FYI if you find this post via Google.  Call Verizon Tech Support 866-788-9387 (Option 2, Option 2) to get it sorted out.

Also the unit I purchased has a Bluetooth "RF cable" but no module built-in.  You need to order: TOSHIBA BLUETOOTH VERSION
1.2 MINI-MODULE  (pn#F93432 or PA3425U-1BTM) for $143 to get it to work.  As a work around since I need to get to my Bluetooth GPS unit for some travel next week in DC, I went out and got a USB 2.0 Keningston external that is working pretty well.

Today we look at Paula Rooney recent article on Microsoft identity management news announced at the recent Tech Ed 2005 product training conference. The article is published in Computer Reseller News for June 27, 2005.

This platform is based on Microsoft Integrity Integration Server 2003 and will be enhanced with future Service Packs to improve security and operational efficiencies related to regulatory requirements.  Future versions will enable: Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions; better password synchronization; rich workflow; centralized auditing & reporting; and more robust platform integration options.

This solution competes with current solutions from Citrix, Novell, Red Hat, and Sun.

We pass along that PC Magazine for July 2005 gives two projectors a PC Magazine Editor’s choice award — Dell 1100MP for $799 got a 4.5 out of 5 score.  As did the PLUS Vision Corp’s Plus V-332 that lists for just under $2K.

The Dell DLP unit supports SVGA at 800 x 600 with 1400 ANSI lumens.  The unit also offers a 480:1 contrast ratio.

The Plus V-332 DLP is just under 3 pounds with 1200 ANSI lumens.  It has some nice travel features: shutter lens cover; no cool down period; manual and auto digital zoom; easy to use remote control.  Only real draw back was playing video on the unit was functional but "not good."

Christy and I got to see Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons on Sunday night at Humphrey’s By The Bay.   It was a great concert.

We followed it up, seeing the show again on Monday night with some of the Jersey Boys cast participating.  It was better than the Sunday show.

I got to shake Mr. Valli’s hand, and Christy got some signatures for her memorabilia at the dessert benefit for the La Jolla Playhouse after the show.
