Forbes FYI for Oct05 also had a custom historical map pointer to artists Constance Brown and Julie Ruff at RedStone Studios to compliment the concept of Vogel Bindery’s custom books.

If you’d like to translate your family or business history into a classical historical map representation, then you can get started for $4000.  In addition, they have created some maps of popular areas (Tuscany, Nantucket, Martha’s Vinyard, Costa Rica, and East Africa) for significantly less money.

  • StressEraser (i.e. Pocket Yogi?)

Forbes FYI for Oct05 had a quick product overview of a small device called StressEraser that retails for $400 (seems pretty expensive, I think that MAKE magazine should come up with a cheaper alternative).

The unit apparently monitors your "blood" pressure via you index finger, and then gauges your stress level.  If your level is too high, then it attempts to get you to use breathing techniques to get you back to a better emotional focus level.

Forbes FYI for Oct05 had a potentially interesting pointer to Vogel Bindery that builds custom books and amazing book covers.  Not for the cheap though, average price is $1000 each.

  • Fun DC Area (Virgina) Runs

During my recent trip to DC, I stayed in the Ballston, Virgina area instead of my typical Crystal City stay.

My hotel ended up being right next to W&OD Trail system.  I had some great runs on Thursday and Friday morning (even though I got completely soaking wet on Friday morning).

Make sure you plan accordingly if you visit the DC/Virgina area especially if you are a runner or a biker.

The Crystal City area also has some good access to similar trails. A great resource.

  • Making A Traveling Microbrew Fan’s Experenience Worse?

I am guessing that anyone that is a microbrew fan and travels a great deal, is probably quite aware of this problem.  At least on the airlines I typically fly, getting a good beer on board usually means having to settle for a Heineken

To make matters worse, on the flight back San Diego from Washington DC on Delta this month they have two great articles in their Oct05 Sky Magazine to make this dilemma worse: Overview of Oktoberfest, and a highlight article on Dogfish Head Craft Brewery.

Today we are going to look at two new Apple Macintosh solutions worth checking out.

The first is a security tool called Little Snitch by Objective Development that monitors and reports on your Mac OS X network traffic. You can also control what applications or processes can talk on what ports to what servers and with what protocols.

The second item is a must have for anyone who wants audio-in for an Apple iBook G4 — the USB 2.0-savvy Griffin iMic that also offers audio-out.  It is simple to use (just plug it in) and works great.

Also for more information about the special Halloween podcast from the new group I’m involved in called "FriendsInTech" then check out FriendsInTech.com.  You can also check out Forums.FriendsInTech.com to post questions, feedback, and interact with other FriendsInTech podcasters and listeners.

Before we get to the news, there is a "trailer" for a very special Halloween podcast from FriendsInTech.com included in this podcast. Look for a great fun podcast in your TechNewsRadio.com subscription feed on Friday morning (not this Friday, but the Friday before Halloween).

If you are in the market for an enterprise document management tool then you might want to check out Xythos Enterprise Document Management Suite 5.0 from Xythos Software.

There was a recent Test Center Preview recommendation from Mike Heck at InfoWorld published back on 01Aug05. And Government Computer News (GCN) published on 08.29.05 and written by John Breedent II assessed v5.0 with an A score overall with an A in Performance & Features; and A- in Ease of Use & Value.

    Summarized key features:

    • Companion Xythos Drive for Windows with WebDAV functionality
    • Easy access to permission rights, file locking, and versioning
    • Change status notifications and subscriptions
    • Document retention rules
    • Secure email outside the system with links
    • Software designer tool to utilize APIs to build complex work flows
    • Secure remote access options

The base cost is $45K for 250 users, but the price can drop to $31 a user for purchases above 10,000 users.  Definitely something to check out.

I took the red-eye last night to get some hands-on face-time in DC on Wed, Thu, and Fri.  Everybody thinks I’m crazy but I actuallly get some good sleep on the flight, and it makes things work better at home not giving up a full day to get to the East Coast.

Only thing that really sucks is that I’m on the East Coast and tonight’s baseball game isn’t starting in the 5 pm hour but the 8 pm hour … 😦
