PC Magazine published for May 24, 2005 on page 120 has a short pointer to Tascam DP-01FX eight-track hard drive recorder. While this sounds interesting as a possible podcast production studio unit, there are three drawbacks identified by the reviewer Steven Wishnia: you can only record two track simultaneously, the metering and components [AND I QUOTE] "could be better", and the effects settings are out of the box set to presets that might not be useful.  He rates it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.  The unit retails for $500.
