I have to agree a lot with this post Evil Genius Chronicles – Another Reason Not to Work for Free 05 08 2005.  Dave continues to make good sense with regards to advertising and creating content with value.

My only real difference in opinion is that someone may want to do this for "marketing" or "self promotion" value.  For instance, http://www.technewsradio.com is making some money via selling stuff either that I recommend or link to via Amazon.  So, anything that drives traffic to this site, does make it more likely for a "sale" to take place.
