Tech Tidbits Daily for May 4, 2005

This is your Tech Tidbits Daily for Wednesday, May 4th, 2005. Today’s
podcast contains one technical news item.

  • Hardware Analysis has a great article by Dan Mepham that looks at Intel’s new dual core processors the Pentium Extreme Edition and the Pentium D. These new processors do require a new chipset the 955X which is out now, or in the near future the 945X. It should be noted that the new AMD dual core processors are backward compatible to existing boards.
  • The primary focus of the testing was multi-tasking scenarios comparing a Pentium 4 660 in standard mode and in hypertheading mode.  The tests included Photoshop filter, archiving a large file, and copying a DVDs while reading a very large PDF file. The numbers are sort of what would be expected, the new dual cores did much better than the standard Pentium 4 660 but only slightly better when hyperthreading was enabled.
  • If someone is a heavy multi-tasking user then the dual core is probably for them. As Dan acknowledged in his review, know your users, their applications, and your cost constraints; and then you’ll be empowered to make the right technology deployment decision like this one.
